Learning has
been Reg's lifelong passion. It involves change through the releasing
of potential, his own and others' whose learning he facilitates.
William Butler Yeats said it well: Teaching is not the filling
of the pail, but the lighting of the fire.
Reg's approach
to teaching/learning evolved over three decades at York University.
As a Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies he: taught
an array of graduate courses in planning theory/practice; supervised
numerous major papers, major projects, theses and independent studies;
and was faculty advisor to over 400 graduate students undertaking
individualized study programs. Reg has continually pursued his own
learning, including successful completion of a doctoral program
in 1995.

Reg's
approach to teaching/learning:
- values self-direction
(learning directed by and toward self) and collaboration (learning
with others)
- begins where
the learner is at; is inside/out and empowering
- engages learners
fully: experiencing, reflecting on the experience, making sense
of the reflection, and creating new experiences to repeat this
learning cycle
- respects
learners' preferred way of learning and helps them stretch to
unfamiliar ways for greater versatility
- honours the
cognitive and the affective (thoughts and feelings) as well as
alternative ways of knowing and forms of knowledge
- takes chances
to innovate and have fun
- is reflexive;
involves learning about oneself learning
Reg
offers the following learning-related services:
- Individualized
learning plans.
Often, going back to school is neither feasible nor desirable,
and the necessary continuing-education course doesn't exist. Reg
will work with you to prepare and enact a study program to advance
your learning in whatever area or field you choose. This may range
from updating your existing knowledge base to getting into something
completely new. Learning proceeds in an informal self-directed
manner, and at your own pace.
- Learning
style. Reg can help you identify your preferred ways
of learning, access less-preferred modes, and enlarge your learning
repertoire. A similar service is available for work groups or
teams seeking to increase their effectiveness in a demanding work
environment.
- Assisting
graduate students to complete the final stages of their programs.
Many students drop out for lack of support, especially at critical
moments when they get stuck, enthusiasm wanes, or life intervenes.
Reg can help you overcome obstacles, tap fully into your creativity,
achieve your goals, and feel good about the outcome. For more
