What is the coach's role?

Coaching assumes that only you know what's best for you. As your coach, Reg is a guide, a sounding board, and a source of encouragement and challenge. He is not an expert telling you what to do. The coaching agenda — life purpose, values, vision, plan, commitment, achievements and learning — is yours alone. Together we design the alliance that will forward this agenda, and we accept joint responsibility for holding you accountable to it.

What is coaching not?

Coaching is not therapy. Coaching is oriented toward action that advances the client's agenda. Therapy focuses more on self-understanding and healing. The coach does not put you on the couch.

Coaching is not advising or expert-driven consulting. The coach provides questions; answers come from the client.

Coaching is not mentoring. The client is not a protégé. The coach is not a sage, a role model or "someone to watch over you." Nor is the coach necessarily one who has been there, done that, and ready to share that knowledge (an exception is an "internal" coach, such as a manager working with a subordinate).

Coaching is not teaching, though it clearly involves learning.

How does Reg's coaching work?

Your initial contact with Reg is a free consultation session, usually on the phone. If appropriate, a complementary coaching session will follow to consider your situation and needs, Reg's ability to help, and each party's willingness to work with the other. Included is some "practice" coaching to give you a feel for what to expect and to test the relationship.

If coaching proceeds, the next step is a one-hour orientation and intake session. It has two aims: to identify and assess your issues, context and personal characteristics; and to co-design the coaching alliance.

Although individual arrangements vary, coaching typically involves regular sessions on the telephone along with (geography permitting) some face-to-face meetings and with email support. This process usually extends over several months.

At the outset a mutually acceptable contract is drawn up outlining Reg's qualifications, your rights as client, the coaching services to be provided, frequency and methods of communication, fees and payment. The contract also guarantees full confidentiality of the sessions and, if requested, anonymity.

At regular intervals, coach and client jointly evaluate the coaching relationship to see how it's going and to determine its future. If coaching proceeds, any required adjustments are made including its focus, frequency and fee. Upon termination of the relationship, a final brief session is held to reflect on the coaching process and deepen the learning from it.

What does coaching cost?

The fee for coaching is negotiated upfront. It depends on the nature of the coaching, the degree of involvement between the two parties, and how much background work Reg will have to do. Your financial circumstances may also be a factor. Bartering and exchange of services may also be options.

Various packages are available, each including routine email backup:

  • Three, 40-minute coaching sessions: $200 per month
  • Two coaching sessions of 40 minutes + one 60-minute session and a 10-minute check-in: $250 per month
  • A monthly fee or retainer covering coaching to a specified time and dollar limit
  • As-needed coaching: $50 per half hour
  • Corporate/executive coaching and customized workshops: call for individualized pricing estimate.

Referrals are welcomed. Clients who provide referrals (see guidelines) may be eligible for free coaching.

Guidelines for referrals

Reg offers an hour of FREE coaching for each referral, provided that the following conditions are met:

  • The referral comes from a current or former client who has experienced Reg's coaching; in other words, the client can vouch for Reg as a coach and is in a position to determine that coaching could benefit that individual.
  • The consultation between Reg and the prospective client progresses to the next stage, a complementary session.
  • If the referral results in a new client for Reg, the "referee" is eligible for an additional hour of coaching at no charge.
